What is cardiac & pulmonary rehab?

Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation can help improve your heart and lung function.

Cardiopulmonary rehab is a medically supervised program designed to improve cardiovascular and lung health if you have experienced a heart attack, heart failure, angioplasty, heart surgery, or lung conditions related to COPD or illness such as COVID-19.

In cardiopulmonary rehab, you will learn how to:

  • Manage your heart or lung problem and other conditions you may have, such as high blood pressure and high cholesterol

  • Exercise safely

  • Medication education

  • Eat a heart-healthy diet and nutritional counseling

  • Quit smoking

  • Reduce stress and depression

  • Training in breathing strategies to manage symptoms

  • Get back to work sooner and safely

Cardiopulmonary rehabilitation is an option for people with many forms of heart or lung disease. In particular, if your medical history includes:

  • Heart attack

  • Coronary artery disease

  • Heart failure

  • Peripheral artery disease

  • Chest pain (angina)

  • Cardiomyopathy

  • Certain congenital heart diseases

  • Coronary artery bypass surgery

  • Angioplasty and stents

  • Heart or lung transplant

  • Heart valve repair or replacement

  • Pulmonary hypertension

  • COPD

  • COVID-related lung/heart issues

Talk to your doctor about a cardiopulmonary rehab program. Many insurance plans, including Medicaid and Medicare, cover it but require your doctor to provide a referral for the program. Once you have your referral, you can contact GRMC scheduling department to set up your appointment. They will also be able to help you with any questions about insurance coverage you may have.
